The Bangladesh Dialogue has successfully hosted the third episode of the TBD Lens in collaboration with Independent University, Bangladesh, the first TBD event in a private university, initiating the conversation about youth, resistance, and democracy.
Entitled “Echoes of Defiance: Youth, Resistance, and the Path to Democratic Restoration,” the event brought together influential experts and young minds who offered powerful insights into the current political landscape of Bangladesh.
Aqib Md. Shatil, Special Correspondent of Netra News and sustainability expert, emphasized the importance of accountability, highlighting that the electoral and reform processes should not be at odds.
Professor Dr. Bokhtiar Ahmed took us through Bangladesh’s history of defiance, from 1952 to the 2018 student movements, underscoring the necessity of a stronger, more empowered populace and a government that serves the people for the nation’s democratic progress.
Sam Jahan, Reuters South Asia’s TV Correspondent, reflected on Bangladesh’s struggle with democracy and shared the deep generational scars left by the violent crackdowns on the 2018 Road Safety and Quota Reform Movements. He urged the involvement of private university students in politics and policymaking, pointing to their vital role in shaping the future.
Professor Dr. Mohammad Nazmuzzaman Bhuian highlighted the growing influence of private university students in the July Uprising and called for, at a minimum, the restoration of democracy to the level achieved after the 1990 uprising, to set the stage for Bangladesh’s democratic maturation.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Independent University, Bangladesh, for their generous support, and to the vibrant audience whose active participation made the event a resounding success.
