‘Chronicles of Freedom’ Premieres in Dhaka, Documenting the Stories and Spirit of July
Dhaka, 9 August 2026:
Chronicles of Freedom, a 53-minute documentary chronicling the experiences, courage, sacrifice and hopes surrounding the historic events of July in Bangladesh, premiered on Sunday at the Crystal Palace Hall of Gulshan Club Limited in Dhaka.
Bringing together political leaders, diplomats, public officials and other distinguished guests, the premiere served not only as a screening of the documentary but also as an occasion to reflect on a defining period in Bangladesh’s recent history and the importance of preserving the experiences of those who witnessed and shaped it.
The documentary draws on interviews with more than 70 people from diverse backgrounds, presenting their memories, observations and first-hand experiences of the events of July. Among those interviewed for the film is BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, alongside political figures, participants, witnesses and others whose perspectives contribute to the broader account presented in the documentary.
Mr. Bobby Hajjaj, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education, attended the premiere as the chief guest. He described Chronicles of Freedom as an honest reflection of what happened during July and thanked The Bangladesh Dialogue (TBD) for taking the initiative to document and preserve this important chapter of the country’s history.
Dr. Ziauddin Hyder, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Affairs, also highly praised the documentary and emphasised the importance of bringing such work to a wider audience. He said documentaries of this nature deserve greater exposure and recognition for their role in preserving significant moments in the nation’s history and ensuring that the experiences surrounding them remain accessible to future generations.
The premiere was also attended by Mr. Yao Wen, Ambassador of China to Bangladesh; Mr. Clinton Pobke, Deputy High Commissioner of Australia to Bangladesh; and Mr. Diepak Elmer, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Switzerland in Bangladesh, along with other invited guests.
Following the screening, guests participated in an experience-sharing session, reflecting on the documentary, the events it portrays and the importance of recording both individual and collective memories of July.
Chronicles of Freedom was conceived as an effort to ensure that the stories, sacrifices, courage and aspirations associated with July are preserved beyond the immediacy of the moment. Through first-hand accounts and personal recollections, the documentary seeks to contribute to a historical record rooted in the voices of people who witnessed, experienced and participated in the events themselves.
The Bangladesh Dialogue said the documentary is intended to contribute to a broader understanding of July and to ensure that the experiences of those who witnessed and shaped this chapter of Bangladesh’s history are not lost to time.
The programme began with the arrival of guests at 5:00 pm, followed by the screening of Chronicles of Freedom at 5:15 pm. An experience-sharing session was held following the screening, and the premiere concluded with refreshments at approximately 7:15 pm.
